Facts About Chile

Chile is about twice the size of Montana, but stretched out into one long, thin piece. The total area of Chile is 756,950 square kilometers (about 469,309 sq Miles), including Easter Island (Isla de Pascua) and Isla Sala y Gomez. This area encompasses many climates, including: desert in the north, Mediterranean in the central region, cool and damp in the south, and temperate in many other places.

Map of Chile

Chile has 6,435 kilometers (4,000 Miles) of coastline, and from sea level climbs as high as 6,880 meters (4.2 miles) atop the highest point, Nevado Ojos del Salado.

Chile borders the entire length of two countries (Bolivia and Argentina) and the bottom of Peru. All three of these borders are somewhat disputed. Bolivia would like to reclaim the Atacama corridor, ceded to Chile in 1884, in order to gain access to a coast. Peru would like to change its latitudinal maritime boundary with Chile. There are territorial claims in Antarctica partially overlapping claims from Argentina and the United Kingdom.
